GURMUKH SINGH – SIKH RELIEF (SOPW) PROGRESS BAIL RELEASE THROUGH THE PUNJAB & HARYANA HIGH COURT

In December 2013, an Amritsar Sessions Court convicted Gurmukh Singh under the Arms Act and the 1967 Unlawful Activities Act. He was handed a harsh sentence of ten years in prison and ordered to pay heavy fines, alongside his co-accused – Pal Singh (France) and Makhan Singh. This was a very disturbing move as they were the first Sikhs in Punjab to be convicted under this Act, which allows for anyone to be labelled a ‘terrorist’ and can be used indiscriminately by the police and authorities.

The Punjab police alleged that all three Sikhs were associated with Babbar Khalsa International, yet failed to provide any concrete evidence of these allegations.
Human rights organizations have generally regarded the Punjab police as one of the most corrupt, ruthless and lawless police forces of Asia, and criticized the Indian Judiciary for allowing their concocted "evidence" and "charges" into the courts.

Sikh Relief (SOPW) took the case to the higher courts, as a precedent must not be set which allows the authorities to pick up completely innocent men, frame them in false cases and imprison them for ten years under the Unlawful Activities Act, which is exactly what happened to these three Gursikhs.

Sikh Relief (SOPW) filed a petition for Gurmukh Singh’s bail release in the Punjab & Haryana High Court and the date for the hearing is due in the coming week. We urge the Sangat, to pray for a positive outcome so Gurmukh Singh can be released from the confines of prison and this chardi kala Gursikh can return home.
