SIKH RELIEF TEAM MEETS WITH SIKH POLITICAL PRISONER SHAMSHER SINGH TO DISCUSS NEXT STEPS TO COMMUTE HIS LIFE SENTENCE

The Sikh Relief team, has this week, gone to meet with Sikh political prisoner Shamsher Singh at his home. Shamsher Singh is currently out on a 42 day parole release that our team successfully arranged for him despite numerous rejections and setbacks. It is also worth noting that Shamsher SIngh is one of fourteen life serving convicts that are at the heart of the Bapu Surat Singh hunger strike awareness campaign for the release of those Sikh political prisoners that have served their minimum term sentences, have no outstanding cases and therefore are eligible for premature release.

Shamsher Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment in August 1995 for his alleged involvement in the Chief Minister Beant Singh assassination case. He was sentenced under section 302 (punishment for murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) alongside 120-B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and U/S 3 & 4 of the Explosive Substances Act. He has no other cases pending and to date, has been awarded a total of three parole release during his 20 years of incarceration.

The Sikh Relief team that went to visit Shamsher Singh consisted of High court lawyer Amar Singh Chahal, Retired High Court judge Justice Ajit Singh Bains and Sikh Relief support workers RP Singh and Parminder Singh. The team discussed the Supreme Court ruling and what steps can be taken to work towards Shamsher Singh’s permanent release based on the initial news reports. Our team is awaiting the judgement from the Supreme Court and is monitoring the situation closely and we will bring you further information as this story develops.
