Projects
Sikh Relief’s newest and most ambitious project so far is to provide learning centres, resources and teaching staff for young people from deprived communities to have the opportunity to learn new skills enabling and empowering them to earn a living and become self-sufficient within six months.
The inaugural group of apprentices consists of 200 girls from the Sikligar community in India’s poorest state, Madhya Pardesh.
This particular course is 6 months and will see graduates leave having attained a high level of proficiency in sewing and tailoring.
Upon completion they will be provided with a machine, all the tools and material along with a supportive contact to ensure they are well equipped to start a new career or become self employed.
Sikh Relief is working in partnership with potential employers to provide job opportunities for the graduates to begin work immediately after completing the course.
With the overwhelming success of the first course Sikh Relief is planning to have 6 further courses in different locations providing similar training and career paths, including plumbing, bricklaying and electrician courses for young men.
